My
name is Ashley Wheeler and I am graduating in May!!! I graduated with 28 students from a small country school. I am originally from Altus, Oklahoma
and moved to Norman after I completed two years at a community college in
Altus. I have three brothers, two sisters-in-law, and two nieces. I am crazy
about my nieces and I have tons of pictures of them on my phone!
My
major is broadcast journalism. I switched my major to journalism after my first
semester at OU. I was a pre-pharmacy student but realized I needed a major
where I could be more expressive. My favorite part about this major is that I am able to meet new people. Every interview I conduct, I am able to converse with someone I've never met. My biggest accomplishment last semester was
putting a package together for OU Nightly about the penny sales tax that President Boren
proposed for Oklahoma. It was the first time I really liked one of my projects.
I
am a full-time student and I work part time for a company that sells tickets to
concerts, Thunder games, etc. The cool part about working for this company is the sometimes-free tickets to games! I am involved in pageants and have competed in
Miss Oklahoma several times. This year will be my last year to compete.
My
absolute favorite artist is Adele. She wrote every single song on her album. I love her form of writing and how she uses her life experiences in her music. She is the type of artist I strive to be. I
think her new album is incredible!! My favorite song at the moment is called
‘All I Ask.’ I think she is even more incredible live. The song is posted below for your enjoyment!
Adele singing
(Source: Wikipedia)
I’ve
been singing since I was 6-years-old and I have been playing the guitar for the
last 5 years. So in my spare time, I love singing, playing my guitar or curled
up on the couch reading a good book. I have read the Harry Potter series all the way through at least four times... and it never gets old!
Journalism is such a great major for this class, Ashley: if you want to experiment with news-writing inspired by these stories, that would be really cool! Journalism offers so many styles, especially interviews where you can bring different people's voices together to tell a story: the actual people involved in some story, eyewitnesses, experts, popular opinion, and on and on. I hope you will have fun with that! And, of course, you could also make your nieces the stars of your stories too: anything is possible when you are the storyteller!
ReplyDeleteI am guessing that you are not the only Adele fan in this class (she is amazing!). Thank you for including a video here in your post: wonderful! You can also put a video in the sidebar, or even create a whole Adele playlist to put in your sidebar. Blogger and YouTube play very nicely together since they are both owned by Google! :-)
Hi Ashley, I’m Ali! I can’t believe you went to such a small school! I thought my graduating class was small at 192, but 28 definitely tops that! I actually considered pharmacy as a career for a while also, but as it happens I am absolutely terrible at chemistry… I love the song that you put up of Adele. I’m not a huge fan, but I like listening to her songs from time to time. I would love to get to know more about you through out this semester!
ReplyDeleteHey Ashley, this is Briana! It's nice meeting you through your electronic introduction.(: I find it interesting that your major is journalism. I am majoring in public relations, originally being pre-nurising my freshman year. I think that's absolutely amazing that you like to sing and play the guitar. It is also pretty cool that you've competed in pageants. I have, too. Looks like we have some things in common! I can't wait to read more and learn more about you. Maybe next time, you'll post a video with you singing. I'll be sure to watch it if you do!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley, my name is Macey! I went to a small high school too, I had 100 people in my graduating class, which is a lot bigger than yours still but I always considered it to be pretty small. That’s awesome that you sing, I am a terrible singer so I envy anyone who can sing because I wish that I could. It sounds like your broadcast major and turned out really well for you, so I’m happy that you found something that you enjoy! I hope the rest of your semester goes well!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley! I'm also a Gaylord student! However, I am an advertising major. I totally agree with what you're saying though about being more expressive. I would not be good at a science or math major for that very reason- it just is what it is! The journalism fields are so much more creative and have so much more flexibility. I love that about them! Also, thank you for including the Adele music video in your introduction. I love her music as well, but since I am a Spotify subscriber, I don't hear her new songs as much. I really enjoyed listening to this one! Is this going to be your last semester at OU? I hope its a great one!
ReplyDeleteHey!
ReplyDeleteI am also from a very small home town. Not as small though. My graduating class was 84. I am from Driggs, Idaho. Being here in Norman is pretty different. Especially the amount of students that attend OU, so many!
Congrats on your senior year! You are so close to being done. It seems like you have made some great achievement in your college time as well. Thats fantastic. I wish you the best of luck and I'm sure you will do great in your career path.
-Ashlie
Hey Ashley! Congrats on being a senior! College can be a long, hard road and being almost done must be nice! I went to a small private high school and graduated with 116, so OU was definitely a wake up call! I also love Adele and Harry Potter! Adele's new album is amazing and has so many talented pieces on it! Good luck with your final semester!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley, this seems like a great class for a journalism major to take, lots of writing experience. Journalism seems like it could be a fun major.
ReplyDeleteI haven't really listened to any of Adele's songs. Thanks for sharing the music video, it was interesting to learn a little more about you. Good luck with this semester, enjoy your senior year.

ReplyDeleteHello... its me...
ReplyDeleteHaha Hey Ashley! I also have a niece and I also have a nephew I am completely obsessed with. I have so many picture of them on my phone and all my social media accounts that I have to constantly remind people that I am Aunt CC and not their mom. I hope you sing and play guitar for your nieces because I bet they would love it! I am not trained like you are but I love singing. I do it all the time. When I sing to my niece and nephew I can always get them to dance along and they love it! Good luck with your senior year!
Hello from the other side! (of the screen). My wife is also crazy about her niece as well. I guess that is the thing for aunts. What a wonderful major, so maybe someday, you will be on the radio. I was a pre-pharmacy major as well. I decided to continue on my chemistry because I want to do something that I am good at but I am still trying to be a pharmacist if I can be. So you can sell a ticket for a thundergame? You are already a big part of this soceity! haha. that is interesting. I hope you have a fun time in this class.
ReplyDeleteHello Ashley, It's nice to meet you! My name is Austin! I was also a pre-pharmacy major right out of high school. I switched to pre-dental when I transferred to OU as a sophomore and then switched to aviation! I know, it's a big change! lol I also LOVE Adele! Her new album is AMAZING! In October I have front row seats to see her in Miami! I don't know how I got so lucky! I'll probably end up passing out from excitement! lol
ReplyDeleteI have two nieces as well and I adore them. I have 6 siblings but I can say with 100% certainty that I have more pictures of my nieces on my phone than I do of all siblings combined. My brother and sister-in-law are expecting a kid and I’m really hoping that they have a boy, I need a nephew. I’m also a big fan of Adele and Harry Potter.
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley! I love Harry Potter too--and Adele (she's seriously amazing)--and I can totally relate to needing a major that lets you do best what you do best, you know? That's why I ended up with anthropology! It's so cool that you got to put together that package for the OU Daily--I think I saw that broadcast! What's your favorite part of being a journalism major? Do you get discounts on tickets and stuff from your work? That would be awesome, but I know most of the time it doesn't turn out like that...
ReplyDeleteAAAAHHHH I LOVE HARRY POTTER, TOO!
ReplyDeleteHaha, nice to meet you, Ashley! Really, though, my best friend and I are HP and LOTR fanatics; it's what keeps us close. I haven't re-read the series (although I frequently want to, and I did re-read the last one before the movie) because I have a never-ending list of books I want to read that I already don't have time for. :p
I'm glad that you're doing something you enjoy, and that you figured that out your first semester! I'm a PW major. I've always liked writing, and been good at it, and I knew if I did anything else, I'd just be frustrated and bored.
That's so neat that you sing and play the guitar! I wish I was more musically inclined, but that's not my gift. What's your favorite type of music to sing??
Hey Ashley! Thats crazy you have 3 brothers! In my family there are three girls and one boy, so its the opposite! I never thought how it would be just having brothers though! Im sure you're very tough haha. I am my brothers only younger sibling so he always picked on me, so I couldn't imagine having more of that! But brother are always the best protectors and always look out for you! If you get discounts for Thunder tickets hit me up because I am always down to go to a game! My whole family is Thunder fanatics, I actually named my cats after some of the players. Good Luck with the rest of your semester!
ReplyDeleteIt's so cool that you've competed in Miss Oklahoma! I am so impressed that you learned to play the guitar and sing from such a young age! I'm sure you've seen the clip, but in Adele's carpool karaoke with James Corden, she mentions that she names her albums after her age because it's like a snapshot of her life at that time, which I thought was very smart and creative. Nice to meet you!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley! I think its so cool that we are the last few weeks of the semester and here I am just now visiting you blog and learning all these awesome things about you! Its so remarkable that you grew it in such a tiny town and then went on to go to school at OU and also compete in Miss Oklahoma. I love Adele also; one of my biggest regrets so far is that I didn't buy tickets for her tour... maybe you'll get to go for free!
ReplyDeleteHey Ashley! It was nice getting to read your introduction and learn a little bit about you. I am also graduating in May so congrats on that. It feels weird to be done with undergrad and it is definitely bittersweet. That is awesome you are doing something that allows you to be more expressive. I have a good friend, Steven Mudd, who I think is doing something similar here at OU. Maybe you know him? I too like meeting new people and I think that is awesome you get to do that with your major/future career. It is one of my favorite things learning about people because everyone is so different. Good luck in your pageant and I hope the rest of the semester goes well.
ReplyDeleteAshley, Thats awesome you are a broadcast journalism major. I have always wondering what it would be like to be a journalist! My favorite journalist would have to be Hunter S. Thompson. I absolutely love Harry Potter as well! I have watched all the movies several times and read most of the books. Good luck with the rest of the semester and your future!
ReplyDeleteI love Adele as well! But I have to say I like 19 and 21 more than her current album, no matter how iconic Hello is! Whenever I meet someone who doesn't know or like Adele's music I'm always totally shocked because she's just so talented! I recently rewatched Harry Potter and it was such a great investment of my time!
ReplyDeleteHi Ashley,
ReplyDeleteI am so glad I had the opportunity to visit your blog during the last week of the semester! I don't know how I haven't been on it before with all of the comments we've had to make throughout! I am also a Gaylord student, but an advertising major. Like you, I also switched my major at one point in my college career. Freshman year, I started out as a marketing major in Price but realized that math was not my strength and switched over to advertising. It was the best decision I've made and I'm so happy I did it.
I guess you're graduating in a week! How exciting! Do you know what your plans are after graduation? I wish you the best and good luck in the real world!
