  1. Wow the introduction for your storybook is amazing. The whole time I was thinking that you must be from there so it was a shocking surprise to see that your writing it from the perspective of the mayor. The whole time I was reading the introduction I was imagining the entire setting you were laying out for us. It makes me want to go and visit there so bad. I can just hear the bells ringing and everyone rushing tot he stage. I am excited to hear the stories and see why his fairy tales were so popular. The picture of Andersen's home almost looks like it could be in a fairy tale itself. Maybe that is just how all of Denmark looks though. I thought it was such a cool idea for everyone to dress up as their favorite characters from the fairy tales. It is always fun when you have an excuse to dress up like a goof and pretend to be someone else. It kind of made me think that this could be a European festival that might look somewhat like disneyland or disney world.

  2. Hey Ashley! What a great way to start off reading the Storybooks for this week! I love Hans Christian Anderson’s fairy tales as well so I look forward to seeing more stories later in the semester! I also think it was a great set up to have this written from the perspective of the town’s mayor. It allows you some freedom to modernize whatever is going on, and have fun with who is ‘reading’ the stories. I also would love to travel to Denmark, so getting to vicariously experience through these stories will be exciting!
One thing you might look at is reviewing your introduction with a bit of a finer tooth comb. You have a few spelling/grammatical errors sprinkled throughout. Super easy fixes, but the rest looks great! I think that this is going to turn out to be a wonderful Storybook!
Good luck with the rest of your semester and I can’t wait to come back and see what more you do!

  3. Hi Ashley! I really like the layout of your blog. I liked how you used an image that has books on it for your background. Since this is a class where we do a lot of storytelling, I thought that was brilliant! I also really like how your font color compliments your background image nicely.

  4. Hey Ashley! The intro to your storybook is great, I am really intrigued! I really like the perspective that you wrote it, I think it will be exciting to read from the view point of the mayor. The layout of your storybook is also really good which is important. I look forward to being able to read more from your storybook!

Also really nice to meet you! I am from a really small town in southern OK too, so I can relate to you a little on that. Good luck on becoming Miss Oklahoma! That would be such a neat thing to be able to do. Also, I really wish I could sing, such a good talent. I was a journalism major for a short bit, super interesting degree path that will lead to an interesting career. To be able to write as a job would be so cool.

  5. Ashley, great introduction to your storybook! April 2nd sounds like such a fun day in Odense. I loved all the details you used to describe this historical day. The very end of your introduction definitely left me on the edge of my seat. I wondered to myself “Is the cake massive?” “Is something wrong with the cake?” “Did someone steal the real cake?” These are all questions that make me want to continue reading you story! What if you added some quotations in the intro to bring a certain character to life? What if you introduced the famous baker from the start? These are just some simple ideas I thought of when I was reading through your introduction. I also thought you could come up with a few more details about the day itself (such as more activities, what the parents do, the decorations used, etc.). Overall, this was such a great introduction! I am eager to see what happens next!

  6. Hi Ashley!
I loved the introduction to your story book! It was an extremely creative topic. I have to say, I wish that this festival was real! You used impeccable details and imagery. It was easy as a reader to imagine what the town must have looked like on April 2nd and how dearly they obviously valued Hans Christian Anderson's legacy. My favorite image may have been the cake in his image. How cool would that be to see? I also love your choice of narrator. It seems like he is the perfect embodiment of the spirit of the town. Overall, your introduction got me excited to read more and your lead in to Thumbelina did so even more! I can't wait to come back to your page!

  7. I like the book background on your blog page!

  8. Hi Ashley, I really enjoyed your first story about Thumbelina! Once I started reading it I realized that I had never read or seen the original story, so your author's note was really helpful at the end when I got to it! After reading that, and seeing how much you actually changed, your story seems very unique! I think it's great that you decided you wanted to change the outcome of all of your stories. It will make them very interesting to read. I think it'll be good too since they are all coming from the same author, then you can really change his writing style to yours instead! I also really liked the setting you put the story in, and I think it would be really cool to have some resolution with Helga at the end of your story.I can't wait to hear more form you, and see what else you have in store for Hans’ tales.

  9. Ashley, I was so pumped up when I saw that you had chosen an Adele song for your comment wall. Adele is such an incredible singer (there is no one who can compare to her talent!) This is one of my all time favorite Adele songs. I had never seen this music video before so it was fun getting to watch it for the first time! Great choice!

  10. Oh Adele, such a wonderful woman. She can make a person feel a certain way even if it is no where near where you are in life. All of her songs have this intensity to them that just take you away. She is definitely a wonder in this world and let's pray that she continues to make music!

  11. Hi Ashley, I really have enjoyed your Storybook so far! I liked how in the Introduction you said that children get the opportunity to have their name chosen out of a hat to have their favorite story read. Oddly enough, it actually reminds me of the reaping from The Hunger Games when each child has their name thrown into the drawing to represent their district for the annual Hunger Games. I really liked how you changed the original story of Thumbelina to where she became human-sized! It definitely made me think of the whole story a lot differently. The only thing I can think of revising is maybe seeing if the children can be involved in the storytelling? Maybe the children have rehearsed how they can tell the story? I think that would put a fun twist on all of the stories. I look forward to reading more of your stories in the future weeks to come. Great job!

  12. Hi Ashley! I'm really excited to see that your Storybook is about Hans Christian Andersen's stories! I love them, and when I was reading your introduction all I could think was that it was SO COOL that you decided to use Odense as the setting of the town! Is there really an annual festival that goes on there, or did you make it up? I thought that it was creative of you to use the mayor as the main character, although I thought that he seemed a bit like the ONLY thing he cared about was the festival, and that he didn't really seem to have any emotions other than happiness--and I wonder if maybe you couldn't put in some bits, either here or later on, about how he feels about certain townspeople--maybe he dislikes some of them, because of how they act at the festival or at other times? And I found myself wondering about these Storytellers, which you don't really talk much about except to say that they're very talented--maybe you could talk a bit more about them? In any case, I very much enjoyed reading your Storybook, and I thought that your take on Thumbelina was very refreshing! I wish you luck going forward!

  13. Hey Ashley! I love that you chose a live performance of Adele for your video! I also chose a live performance for my comment wall of her singing When We Were Young on SNL. You should check it out. Is there anyone else that compares to her? No, I don't think so. Lol. I also have front row tickets to see her in Miami in October and I CANNOT wait! I just might pass out from excitement when I see her.

  14. I loved reading your Thumbelina story in your storybook! I also like your whole storybook and I think it's a really interesting and creative idea for how to connect all of your stories together. I loved that Thumbelina realized how cruel she was being to everyone. I also wondered how her parents felt about her new size. I'm sure they liked the new attitude, but they must have been sad to lose their tiny child. I always think stories with very very good and kind characters seem so unrealistic, so this story was perfect in my eyes! Everyone has flaws, and sometimes parents spoil children; that's just life! I can't wait to read more of your storybook as the semester continues! I love learning about new stories that I didn't read for the class because I feel like I get the advantages of learning without the disadvantages of reading an old story!

  15. Hi Ashley, I am in the Indian Epics class, and I picked your storybook as my free choice because you chose to do stories from Hans Christen Andersen. First off, the premise of your storybook is something that I haven't seen before. I thought it was cool how you chose to recreate the stories literally in his hometown. It's like you built this awesome fictional fan club for Hans. At first, I thought the April holiday was an actual event, but then I realized you came up with that on your own!

I also read your story, "Thumbelina". It is neat that you got to re-experience a story you grew up with, and you also got a chance to remake it. Your remake was awesome. The way you changed Thumbelina's attitude was a refreshing take on the classic fairy tale genre.

The image you have for Thumbelina is perfect, but I also wanted to see a picture of the Hans cake! If you found one of those, that would be so cool!

  16. Oh my goodness, the introduction to your storybook is so cute and creative! I love that the stories you tell will all be a part of such a wonderful celebration! I love that you are speaking as the mayor and that the mayor seems so excited about all of the events about to unfold. The introduction really captured my attention and imagination and compelled me to keep reading.

Onto the story! I love how you introduced the story with the little child that wanted it read. I also love that you are being authentic with all of the names that you use. I like that you completely changed the story. It was a fun new version unlike any that I have heard before which is rare for such a popular story. The only suggestion I have is it would be a good idea to go back to edit for some spelling and grammar mistakes. Other than that it was lovely to read and I really love your concept as a whole. Well done!

  17. Hi Ashley, I really liked your storybook introduction! I can tell that you will be able to do a lot of different things with the fun fairytales in this storybook. I like all the different aspects of this celebration that you described such as the drawing and reading of the child’s favorite story, and the big cake that is made for the 100th anniversary. At first I thought that the story’s date, April 2nd, was going to have something to do with April fools on April 1st haha, just a little though that went through my head. I’m sure the mayor of a little unique town like this has all kinds of story’s to tell about its people. I also like that the town dresses up as characters from Hans Christian Andersen stories, that is probably such a fun event to have! I will have to check back in later to read about the stories from this little town! Keep up the great work!

  18. Ashley,

How neat that you’re doing Hans Christian Anderson stories—gotta love the classics! (Have you heard the thing about Frozen and their names? Hans, Christoff, Anna, and Sphen? Get it?)

One thing I’d really like to know…is the celebration you described in the introduction true?? It sounds really cool! I would love to know if that’s a real thing. And what an interesting perspective to tell the story from, Anderson’s hometown and its mayor—interesting!

“Some children are perfect angels when they come out… others are more difficult.” Ha! Was this line in the original story (or something like it)? Either way, it’s funny. Although I’d say most children end up being difficult at some point…

I also really liked that you decided to create an entirely new Thumbelina story! I’d never seen the movie or really knew the original tale, but I’m sure many people do, and it’s fun to have a new story to hear about a loved character—especially when they get taught an important lesson!

  19. Hey Ashley! I love that your storybook is based off of Hans Christian Anderson’s stories! I had no idea that he wrote Thumbelina! I read your story about Thumbelina and thought you did a great job with it! I like how inside your story, people are actually reenacting a story! I love the mini illusion you have set up! Also, I liked how you retold the original Thumbelina story! Totally different and you still conveyed an important moral! Thinking about Thumbelina being no bigger than the size of a human thumb is crazy! I don’t know how I would like being so tiny! The whole setup of your storybook is very creative and different, I really like it! It all revolves around a children’s story book and it is something I would have never expected! Great job! I can’t wait to read the other stories that will be reenacted! Keep up the good work!

  20. Hi, Ashley! I just finished reading your storybook and they were quite entertaining! I actually went to Denmark 2 years ago and got to visit Hans Christian Andersen's museum, so I was very excited to click on your storybook. I have never read The Wicked Prince before, so it was very fun and to be honest, a little stressful to read. I liked the ending though, the prince deserves that ultimatum! I have read the kid version of Thumbelina before, years ago. I think in that story she meets a prince or something along those lines. This version is very much the adult version of that and had unexpected turns. I didn't realize how spoilt Thumbelina was in the original version, and it was fun to read a different version of the kid story I've read before. I don't know if you meant it, but your fonts are different on the two pages, which was a bit disorienting at first.

  21. Hi Ashley! This week, I read your story, “The Prince” this week and thought you did an excellent job with it! It made me so sad that the prince grew up as a spoiled and rude boy, and told lies all the time. It made me even more sad that he convinced himself that he was not upset about his parents’ death. I sorta felt bad for him when he felt lonely, but it is hard to feel sympathy for someone who deserves it! I am so glad Angelina had so much faith and continued to trust God’s path because that is a message that everyone should know and trust in! I’m glad the prince got an ultimatum at the end and I am so glad that he changed his ways forever! Great ending to your story, I loved it and thought your storybook is coming along nicely! Great Job, Ashley!

  22. Hey Ashley! First, I am also a huge Adele fan, I just wanted to let you know that. I absolutely love When We Were Young by her, so great video!

I read The Prince this week, and I must say that I really enjoyed it! You are obviously a very talented writer, this comes out in the story. The character development you had was great, made the story so much more enjoyable. I also really like the imagery you chose, it made your story that much easier to relate to! Imagery is so important whenever writing, and I feel like you get that. Because of all of this I was able to relate to your characters very well! Altogether, it was a great ending to your story, very fitting. Thanks for sharing, I hope your finals go okay!

  23. Ashley,

I am from the Indian Epics class and I decided to look through the Mythology and Folklore class projects. As soon as I saw the title of your storybook, I knew I had to read it. I have always been a huge fan of the stories of Hans Christian Anderson. The one's I am most familiar with are "The Little Mermaid" and "The Snow Queen" so I was really excited to see what you had in store! One suggestion as I was reading through your introduction would be to make the font larger. It can be hard to read. I had no idea that April 2 was Han's birthday! I love that you are writing your storybook like you are at a festival. It is very creative. I chose to read your story "Thumbelina" purely because I love the movie. Your Thumbelina is very different from the sweet character in the movie. I was glad because it was not what I expected and made me want to read more. I like how you made her just like everyone else at the end because she was rude and thought she was special because she was small. Overall, great job with the story! I loved it!
